Why Membership

Why membership? At The Cross Church we choose to move forward in the understanding that membership is important because it unites the body of Christ together.  It is not meant in any way to divide members from attenders, but to unite a family of people who are willing to commit to become an active part of the Church and its vision.  In our day and culture too many people want to just “attend” church without making a commitment to root themselves in it.  Membership calls us to participate and engage, not consume and observe.

At The Cross, membership happens within the idea of “covenant”.  For thousands of years a covenant was a binding agreement in which covenant members had certain obligations and could expect certain benefits in return.  What makes a covenant different from a simple binding agreement is that covenant implies meaningful relationship.  We find covenant all throughout the Scriptures.  In the Bible, covenant meant an agreement that lasted for a lifetime.  For example, we find it happening with Noah, Abraham, Moses, the people of Israel, and a new covenant, available to all through Jesus.  At The Cross, we’re attempting to use this meaningful term while recognizing that membership at a local church is often not for life.

Any follower of Christ is invited to become a Covenant Member of The Cross.  In covenanting with us, you both agree to and adopt our shared values, beliefs, and INTENTIONAL way of living.

At the Cross, we are building God’s kingdom by changing lives through the word of God.  We are inspired by the life of the Apostle Paul who in 2 Corinthians 5:17 emphatically exclaimed…”If any man be in Christ he is a new creature…

The Cross Christian Church is a non-denominational church that loves to love people from all walks of life, denominations and cultural origins, the Cross serve people of Kern County with love, honesty and respect.  God has assembled some of the most caring and nurturing Christians to build this dynamic and diverse ministry.  Testimonials are prevalent, healing is evident and teaching God’s word is consistent.  Each day, week and month, the Cross Christian Church becomes a place where we are changing peoples’ lives through the word of God.

Four principals of Stewardship

We believe in the Four Principals of Stewardship

⦁ The principal of ownership:

The psalmist begins the 24th psalm with

“The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.”

This is the fundamental principal of stewardship.  God owns everything, we are simply managers of administrators acting on his behalf.  Stewardship is the commitment of one’s self and possessions to God’s service, recognizing that we do not have the right of control over our property or ourselves.

⦁ The principal of responsibility:

We are called as God’s stewards to manage that which belongs to God.  While God has graciously entrusted us with the care, development, and enjoyment of everything he owns as his stewards, we are responsible to manage what the Master has given us.

⦁ The principal of accountability:

A steward is one who manages the possessions of another.  We are all stewards of the resources, abilities and opportunities that God has entrusted to our care, and one day each one of us will be called to give an account for how we have managed what the Master has given us.

Like the servants in the Parable of the Talents, in Matthew 25:14-30, we will be called to give an account to how we have administered everything we have been given, including our time, money, abilities, information, wisdom, relationships, and authority.

⦁ The principal of reward:

In Colossian 3:23-24 Paul writes: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.  It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

The Bible shows us in the parables of the Kingdom that faithful stewards who do the master’s will with the master’s resources can expect to be rewarded.

We should all long to hear the master say what he exclaims in Matthew 25:21

Well done, good and faithful servant!  You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.  Come and share your master’s happiness!

Ownership is key to the Church.  People who understand that they are the body of Christ realize that as a member you have gifts, abilities, talents, skills and an obligation to fulfill your part in the Church.  It might be on Sundays or during the week, no matter when or where, as a covenant member you are placing yourself in a position to help play a part in all functions of the Church.  These roles are not just for some, while others choose to “attend”.  As a covenant member you are willing to sacrifice your time, needs, and wants to help the Church progress forward and meet the needs of others.
